Snapshots of Old West Durham
This is a growing archive
of shots submitted by residents of the neighborhood. Visit it often!

Below are shops on Broad
Street, part of our Ninth Street business district in the neighborhood.

The Bull City Market sign welcomes you. Located across
the street from the old Blackwell's horse race track, this area was
once call Erwin Field -- location of many baseball games. According
to one long-time resident, the ball field was shared by both men's and
women's teams. Sitting in the bleachers was a favorite pastime for many
neighborhood residents. Home
plate was in the corner where the Mad Hatter's Bake Shop is now.

Formerly a Phillips 66 gas station, this building
(now Mad Hatter's Bake Shop) was recognized
by the Historic Preservation Society of Durham for its makeover.

Born in the Old
West Durham, the popular Wellspring Grocery now stands where an A&P
once stood. Next door is Durham Cycle Center -- the only store in Durham
that sells or repairs bikes. Across the street, the main gate for the
Trinity College football field was where the break in the campus wall
can now be seen. Historian David Southern recalls seeing the ticket
windows in the facade when Duke pulled down the brickwork and the brick
remnants of the bleachers in the mid-1980s. Trinity's football stadium
stood where field-hockey is now played. The Angier Duke gymnasium was
likely the fieldhouse.

the pictures to me and I'll scan them and put them on the site.
