Clean Sweep on Green Street
On March 13, 1999, OWD residents cleaned an open space that may one
day become a neighborhood green space.

Green Street crosses at top. Note the old Erwin Mill houses on "Hillsboro"
and the use of any open space to grow vegetables (photo courtesy of

Just one of many piles of refuse gathered by residents
and Durham's Impact Team, which provided the picking equipment, bags
and hauling for the project.

Folks had fun participating in the clean up too!
The weather was ideal for the hard, but enjoyable work.

A makeshift shelter was discovered on the property.

Four truckloads of debris were hauled away from the lot.

There may be residues from a nearby dye pond, large surface
parking lots and storage warehouses in the creek and surrounding soils.
OWNDA will be looking into the situation.
When you push through the brush, the rolling, gentle hills
and winding paths around the clearing hint at the possibilities for a
wonderful green space for Old West Durham (below).
